Acharya Choying Gyurme:

The Practice of Tonglen

Please join us for a delightful special event at KCCL.

Who can attend: Everyone is welcome.

About the teacher: Acharya Choying Gyurmey was ordained by the Very Venerable Khenpo Tsultrim Gyatso Rinpoche in 1992 at the age of 10. After completing basic monastic training and education in Tibetan language, scriptures, rituals and Buddhist history, he entered the 13-year Acharya Program of study at the Rigpe Dorje Monastic Institute at the Lava Kagyu Tekchen Ling Monastery in northeastern India. He successfully completed the program of Higher Buddhist Philosophy and was conferred the Masters (Acharya) Degree. He is presently the resident teacher of the Rigpe Dorje Centre of the Jamgon Kongtrul Lineage in Montreal and we are delighted to welcome him on his first visit to Nova Scotia. He teaches in English.

Description: Tonglen (Tibetan:གཏོང་ལེན་; Wylie: gtong len, or tonglen) is Tibetan for ‘giving and taking’ (or sending and receiving), and refers to a meditation practice found in Tibetan Buddhism.

In the practice, one visualizes taking in the suffering of oneself and of others on the in-breath, and on the out-breath giving recognition, compassion, and succor to all sentient beings. As such it is a training in altruism.

The function of the practice is to:

  • reduce selfish attachment
  • increase a sense of renunciation
  • purify karma by giving and helping
  • develop and expand loving-kindness and bodhicitta.

Suggested contribution: $5.
